Following the official launch of the China-UK Enterprise Educator’s Network, a number of delegates stayed on to attend the World University Network (WUN) Conference, which had been partnered with the Network’s launch. WUN itself is a network of research universities, and the key theme for the Hangzhou conference was enterprise education (http://www.wunchina.org/), there were particularly strong contingents of delegates from the UK, China and the US.
The opening of the event gave members an excellent impression of the drive for innovation and enterprise at Chinese universities. Local government officials illustrated how universities were a vital part of a drive to develop innovative regions such as Zhejiang. Chinese alumni benefactors spoke of the importance of developing science parks at universities, and providing support for student entrepreneurs who wish to incubate businesses by providing financial support and global partnerships.
In response, the UK Research Council’s and the British Council’s representatives in China spoke of the importance of the success of UK research, and the importance of developing joint research projects between Chinese and UK institutions.
Overall this morning was an opportunity to see how the China-UK Network is part of a dynamic period where Chinese institutions are increasingly seeking global partners, and UK institutions are beginning to answer this call in pioneering projects.
